Organic foods are available everywhere. They line our human supermarkets, have restaurants dedicated to serving only certified organic foods and even show up in our soaps and shampoos. When it comes to people food, we know that organic has its benefits. But does this mean the same for our dogs? Actually, it doesn’t.
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets guidelines for allowing pet foods and treats to be labeled as organic. Although it might seem as though AAFCO would have different guidelines for pet food than those needed for human food, this isn’t the case. AAFCO requires that companies follow the requirements listed by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP). According to the NOP, this means that all organic ingredients or products are “produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation and genetic engineering may not be used.”
However there are pet food and treat companies that remain unsupervised when it comes to manufacturing and labeling. In fact, as of today, there are no set regulations for pet foods when it comes to organic ingredients. So why have guidelines when it's not enforced?
Here at OrganiK-9, though, we create pet treats that are fit for human consumption. This means that we’re required by the USDA to manufacture and label accordingly. They take people foods more serious than pet foods, so there’s no room for misunderstanding when it comes to organic ingredients that are safe for human consumption. In other words, all of our certified USDA organic ingredients are made without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and are completely genetically modified organism free. This means that when it comes to our pet foods and treats, “organic” does mean something. You can rest assured that our OrganiK-9 bars are USDA Organic, fit for human consumption and filled with vital nutrients for both you and your dog.
Our USDA Organic ingredients offer greater nutritional value than conventionally grown ingredients, are better for the environment, reduce antibiotic resistance, promote animal welfare and contain vital antioxidants to improve your dog’s overall health and well-being.
